This 13 30-minute program high definition PBS Series offers an unrivaled blend of art, history, travel, science, philosophy, and technique.

David Dunlop travels to magical locations painted by some of the world's greatest landscape painters: Claude Monet's home in Giverny, France, to paint his water lily garden and to the asylum of St. Paul de Mausole in St. Remy en Provence, where Vincent van Gogh committed himself in 1889 and painted many of his masterpieces, including Starry Night, Olive Trees and Cypresses. With his easel and painting supplies in hand, Dunlop scales the rugged terrain of Kaaterskill Falls in upstate New York, where Hudson River painters Thomas Cole, Asher Durand and Sanford Gifford all found inspiration. Dunlop's journey also leads him to Pierre-Auguste Renoir's home and garden at Cagnes Sur Mer, France; the Lieutenant River in Old Lyme, Connecticut; the white cliffs of Etretat on France's Normandy Coast; and Contentment Island off the coast of Connecticut, where John Frederick Kensett painted the Long Island Sound.

This Exclusive limited issue set of Six 2-hour Artist length DVDs was created to raise production funds to produce our Second Season. Each program is approximately 2-hours long and contains certain demonstrations and information that are not in the PBS version. They are created in the same spirit of our PBS version, but are each approximately 2-hrs in length instead of the television length of 30 minutes. Online Workshops with David Dunlop
image In this third Studio Workshop, Emmy award winning artist and teacher David Dunlop uses a glazing technique in oil to create greater depth and mystery to a forest scene.

He begins the painting demonstration with an earlier painting of a forest scene that is already dry. He adds a darker glaze to the entire painting, enhances its composition, and finds a new, more dramatic and mysterious painting through layers of glaze.

image In this Studio Workshop, David will focus on our cultural and biological perception and use of color. He will demonstrate elements of the history and science of color in landscape painting. What do colors mean in different cultures? David will (1) demonstrate how to mix and employ color for dramatic effects, how to use varieties of chromatic harmonies, and how to use color to evoke motion and space, (2) explore how past masters have used color, and (3) demonstrate new technologies for color effect. He paints a demonstration in oil of an urban scene. You can choose from a 720 and a 1080 resolution file for your selection.

Reaching back to earlier landscape painters, he explores how they sketched, composed, and painted. David uses contemporary techniques as well to demonstrate current developments in landscape painting and paints a demonstration oil sketch.
